Jyeshtha Purnima
Jyeshtha Purnima holds deep religious, mythological, and astrological significance. It is a day to seek blessings for health, longevity, peace, and liberation, and is associated with charity, fasting, and various vrats — especially by married women.
Women worship the Banyan tree — the Vat Vriksha — on this day, recalling how Savitri, through her unmatched wit, devotion, and persistence, tricked Yama, the god of death, into returning her husband Satyavan's soul. This timeless act of love and faith is honoured by married women across India who observe the Vat Savitri Vrat with deep sincerity.
This day is also celebrated as the Snana Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri, where the deities are bathed with 108 pots of herbal water — marking the beginning of preparations for the grand Rath Yatra. As Jyeshtha is often the hottest month, acts of charity involving water, umbrellas, and fans are considered highly meritorious, offering relief from the summer heat. Performing Satyanarayan Puja and Tarpan for ancestors on this auspicious full moon day is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and divine blessings to the entire family.
